About the artist
Eugène Alfred Delâtre (1864 - 1938) was a French engraver, painter, watercolorist, and printermaker.
Son of the painter and engraver Auguste Delâtre, Eugène Delâtre was born in Paris in 1864. In 1871, the Delâtre family was forced to emigrate to England due to Auguste's involvement in the Commune. They lived in London from 1871 to 1876.
Eugène Delâtre was introduced to printmaking techniques in his father's printing shop. His training was supplemented by an apprenticeship in drawing and watercolor with John Lewis Brown.
Upon the family's return to Paris in 1876, Eugène Delâtre began working in his father's printing shop, where he became his principal collaborator.
In addition to his printing activities, he developed a significant body of personal engraving, in which color played an important role.
Deeply attached to his neighborhood, he was involved in the Historical and Archaeological Society of Old Montmartre, to which he donated many of his works.
He died on September 24, 1938, and was buried in Saint-Denis.
