about the collection (l'estampe moderne)

l'estampe moderne appeared in 1897-1899 as a series of 24 monthly fascicles, each containing 4 original lithographs, printed by parisian imprimerie champenois. Many accomplished european art nouveau painters contributed works to this publication, which contained only original prints invented and produced especially for this collection. The publication was edited by charles masson and h. Piazza. Each issue came in a paper cover bearing an original lithograph by alphonse mucha.
each lithograph was accompanied by a tissue containing the details (title of the artwork, name of the artist, etc.) and a short text by a well-known author who inspired the artist (this one being by j.-h. Rosny).

about the artist

fernand cormon (1845 – 1924) was a french painter born in paris
his father was the playwright eugène cormon. His mother was charlotte furais, the actress.

at an early age he attracted attention for the perceived sensationalism in his art, although for a time his powerful brush dwelled with particular delight on scenes of bloodshed, such as the murder in the seraglio (1868) and the death of ravana, king of lanka at the toulouse museum. The musée d'orsay has his cain fleeing before jehovah's curse; and for the mairie of the fourth arrondissement of paris he executed in grisaille a series of panels: birth, death, marriage, war, etc. A chiefs funeral, and a series of large paintings for the museum of natural history in paris with themes from the stone age, occupied him for several years. He was appointed to the legion of honor in 1880. Subsequently he also devoted himself to portraiture such as young african woman.

being well-accepted at the annual salon, he also ran an art school, the atelier cormon in the 1880s where he tried to guide his students to create paintings which would be accepted by the salon's jury. Among his students were, for instance: henri de toulouse-lautrec, louis anquetin, eugène boch, paul tampier, émile bernard and vincent van gogh. Other students included alphonse osbert, marius borgeaud, theodor pallady, chaïm soutine, louis muraton and the australian painter john russell.

pour peu que le début de la période diluvienne fût doux, on atteindrait les grottes vers la fin de juillet, mais, en se hâtant, en employant toutes ses journées. Vamireh n'y manqua: de l'aurore au crépuscule sa main vigoureuse tourna la pagaie. Malheureusement, des avaries survinrent à sa pirogue et il fallut dépenser trois jours à un soigneux radoubage. Enfin, on reprit l'eau, le fleuve gonflé se teignait de limon, débordait déjà ses rives les plus basses, le courant s'opposait davantage; il fallait tenir la côte; de gros troncs flottants menaçaient et de terribles algues embrouillaient leurs écheveaux. Elem passait la grosse partie du jour enfouie sous la fourrure, dans la stupeur de l'eau filante; le repos était sa principale occupation. Pour le prendre, on amarrait la barque dans quelque havre. Grâce à une provision de brindilles mises à couvert, le feu flambait assez pour achever de cuire une portion d'élaphe, un palmipède, un poisson harponné en route.
