For centuries artisans from New Mexico's Santa Clara Pueblo have created distinctive "blackware" pottery. Wedding vases such as this piece have long played a key role in their culture. It's two spouts symbolize the bride and groom. A single handle represents two lives joined together. The round space below embodies the circle of life. Usually given to couple by the groom's parents as a welcoming gesture to the bride. At the wedding ceremony - it is filled with blessed water. From which the couple drinks to publicly demonstrate their lifelong commitment.
This Santa Clara Pueblo blackware pottery wedding vase is signed (on the bottom) "Kinlicheni". The artist - Hanna Jay (native name) is a full blooded Navajo of the Red House People of the Rainbow clan. She lives near Hovenweek in the Four Corner area of the Dine' Reservation. For many years she has been creating Santa Clara style pottery. Carrying on traditions taught by her grandmother. Each piece is hand-crafted using local mud and other materials to create glazes. With hand etched designs on the front and back sides.
Measures 4" high x 3" wide x 2.7" deep.
