The Catalina Island Pottery was established in 1927 by William Wrigley Jr - owner of the island at that time. Its purpose was to provide employment for island natives. Along with leveraging the island's natural clay and mineral oxides. Situated on Pebbly Beach near Avalon the pottery's wares quickly became highly coveted. And sold beyond the island's shores in proprietary mainland shops, department, and specialty stores. Ultimately the Wrigley family closed the pottery in 1936. As the cost of producing the pottery was substantially more than the income derived from its sale. Hence today Catalina Island Pottery pieces are rare and highly collected. Not only for their beautiful design, form, and colors. But also because of their scarcity.
This fluted "scalloped" oval centerpiece bowl was produced at the pottery sometime between 1931 and 1936. Its body is crafted of white mainland clay. It is glazed in Desuano Green. Incised mark on the bottom reverse reads "CATALINA ISLAND".
Measures 14.5" wide x 9.5" deep x 3.5" high.
In excellent condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, or issues of note. There are a few kiln marks including one near the top of a bowl "scallop". Such marks are considered part of the appeal of Catalina Island Pottery. And therefore are not considered flaws. Nor to have any negative impact on a piece's value.
