Early 20th Century Portrait of Woman Illuminated by Moonlight by Everett Shinn
This is a pastel on canvas portrait by Everett Shinn ((1876 - 1953), circa early 20th Century. A softly lit, left-facing profile of a dark-haired woman against a deep green background. Rendered in delicate pastel strokes, her expression is introspective and calm. The subtle modeling of the face and moody tonality are characteristic of Shinn’s intimate portraiture. The composition emphasizes quiet dignity and is consistent with Shinn’s early 20th-century portraits of women. Everett Shinn was married to the artist Florence Scovel Shinn 1869-1940.

Everett Shinn is best known for his work in the Aschan School as part of The Eight. With much of his art being produced in New York City at the turn of the 20th century, he established himself as an influential and popular illustrator for magazines and public venues. He was involved both as a commercial artist and fine artist, oscillating between these worlds throughout his career. He is best known for his depictions of street scenes and the liveliness of city life, being able to capture the animated and swift motions of a bustling world.
