This stunning antique Limoges porcelain oyster plate is a rare and historic commemorative piece celebrating the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s voyage (1492–1892) and the 1893 Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition.
This five-well turkey pattern oyster plate features a luxurious hand-painted design with raised gilt gold trim and border with a striking coral red seaweed pattern. Naturalistic oyster shell wells in pearl white with a soft pink luster, and gold-rimmed centers with background oyster shell motifs in soft gray and taupe tones.
On the underside, the plate is inscribed in brown enamel:
“World’s Fair 1492 – 1892”, and bears a faint green underglaze mark — an “L” — attributed to the S&S / L France decorating house, active in Limoges ca. 1891–1906.
