This is a porcelain Saki jug called a "Taru" or "daru" with a handle on the top. On the front is the name of the distillery and an image of Mount Fuji. There is a top cap but none on the bottom part.
The jug was purchased in Japan in the late 1980s but could have been created in either the late 19th century or early 20th century.
This jug is a large saki jug of approximately 16 inches high, including the handle, top part is 14 inches round and the bottom is 10.5 inches round.
The last photo in this announcement is a sample of a recycled jug made into a lamp. Jug can either just be placed on the floor or on a stand.
