This early 20th century Reis Jr Model Photoplane Tilt Head Tripod features sturdy and substantial telescoping maple wood legs and industrial cast iron hardware to adjust and set the position. Repurpose it as a plant stand, Sculpture or bust mount, or display it unadorned in its rugged beauty as the iconic American Hollywood relic it is. Wooden legs telescope from 43" to 72" to the top of the plate. Signed 'Nata P' in paint and pencil, it is indelibly personalized with the name of its previous owner.
Quintessential to early Hollywood filmmaking and photography, Reis tripods were developed by two of the Reis Brothers (Paul and Park), whose family was steeped in Hollywood filmmaking.
Park Reis had early success as a Universal Studios photographer. Ray and Irving Reis provided special effects for The Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind, filming over 1,000 movies between the two of them. Before that, the oldest Reis brother, Irving, was embedded with the German army as a newsreel photographer in 1915. He was the only American cinematographer to receive the Iron Cross from the German Army.
Reis tripods were also used by the famous photographers Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, who relied on Reis tripods to capture their iconic images during this time.

Some gaffing tape or masking tape remains on two of the horizontal metal leg brackets from previous use, which is removable if desired. Most of the black paint on the mounting plate is worn away, revealing the silver-toned metal underneath. The wooden legs are scratched, nicked, and discolored, typical of use and age. less
