A 1957 ink drawing by the German-American artist Ulfert Wilke (1907-1987). This work uses calligraphic lines to create an abstract composition with designs that mimic letters. Initialed and dated to the lower lower right, the drawing is also marked with Wilke's chopmark to the lower right and is unframed.
Wilke studied art at Harvard University and completed his master's degree in Art at the University of Iowa where he later was the founding director of the University of Iowa Museum of Art. After serving in the US Army in WWII, Wilke received the Guggenheim Fellowship twice which offered him the opportunity to live in a monastery and study Japanese Zen calligraphy under monks in Kyoto, Japan. Wilke was awarded many honors and has had many solo exhibitions internationally and within the United States during his career. His works are held at many museums including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
