Croatian painter Vilko Šeferov responded to this toddler’s innate intensity in an endearing portrait that combines the cherubic shape of a little angel with the determination of a future prime minister.
The artist began his training at the Art School in Belgrade and completed his education at the Budapest Academy in 1918.
Known initially for his landscapes, he settled first in Sarajevo and later in Zagreb. Remarkably for his era, Šeferov managed to hold solo exhibitions not only in his home area, but also Vienna, Venice and eventually in the early 1950s in New York, Los Angeles and the adjacent port city of San Pedro, home to one of the largest Croatian communities in the U.S. He even traveled to Egypt in 1962. The exposure to different cultures and art significantly influenced his work; it was said to not only have expanded both this themes and his palette but also led him to portraiture. See less
