Extremely rare Jules Vieillard French Monogrammed Transfer Ware Blue & White Footed Cake Plate / Cake Stand / "Gien", dating from the late 1800s.
Two available. See second listing.
Jules Vieillard was a renowned porcelain maker who took over a large faience factory in Bordeaux in 1845. The factory, Jules Vieillard & Cie, was known for its high-quality earthenware and faience, and it won medals at several World's Fairs in Paris. The mark "NB" (likely referring to "N.B." or "Note Bene") and "ROUEN" suggest a specific pattern or style, possibly inspired by Rouen faience. Pieces from this manufacturer are considered antique French ceramics and can be found in various collections and for sale.
This factory, renowned for its earthenware and ceramics, operated from 1845 to 1895. The cake plate features a blue and white design, typical of the Rouen model produced by the company. The central design includes a monogram, possibly "B". The border showcases a decorative pattern in blue.
Jules Vieillard took over David Johnston's pottery factory in 1845. The company produced a wide variety of pieces, including utilitarian and decorative items, and gained recognition at exhibitions throughout France. After Jules Vieillard's death in 1868, his sons Albert and Charles continued the business until its closure in 1895.
The Rouen model plates, like the one pictured, are examples of the company's work. Pieces from the Jules Vieillard & Cie factory are considered collectible.
