18th century inlaid mahogany Georgian serpentine knife box, circa 1790
Good quality decorative box, serpentine fronted and inlaid with a shell patera to the hinged lid.
Many other knife boxes have had the internal sections removed to be converted to letter or stationery boxes — this box has its original drop-in interior. Further inlay inside the lid with a star and salt-and-pepper strung border.
Brass key plate to the front. Lock no longer present.
Minor surface marks to woodwork; restoration to stringing losses on the exterior. Small loss to woodwork around the interior of the lock area.
Rich colour and hand re-polished.
