We knew -- and still know -- little about it. The subject is an Orthodox Jew wearing a traditional schtreimel hat. He is dignified, composed, and thoughtful. Our expertise is in antique furniture, NOT fine art; however, this portrait was captivating. We allowed ourselves to get caught in a small bidding war -- and won. We could not find the signature, but marked on the back is "Daniel". Subsequently, we discovered an almost identical portrait -- same subject, same pose, attributed (presumably) to the same artist, L. Daniel. That portrait was sold at the Palais Dorotheum auction house in Vienna, Austria on the 1st of August 2023 for 320 euros. As noted, we are not experts in fine art, but the painting appears to us to be in excellent condition. It is beautifully framed. We are only guessing that the portrait may date from the early 20th Century. The exterior measurements (frame) are: height, 26 inches; width, 21 1/2 inches; depth, 1 3/4 inches. See less
