MARKS: "FRANK & DE KEYSER" "PATENTED NOV. 10, 96."
The business relationships that late 19th-century entrepreneur Leo Frank formed never seemed to last. Maybe it was because Frank, of New York, was continually disgruntled. We don't know, but the items they created were indeed exceptional, such as this ornate brass/bronze cigar ashtray with a built-in match holder. Measuring about 6" in diameter and 5" tall, it's in remarkably good condition for a piece that's been around for quite a long time.
The Frank and DeKeyser Company was formed in 1898, following the dissolution of Leo Frank's and then-partner William Bernard's home furnishings company due to disagreements.
Frank and new business partner Israel De Keyser then formed Frank & De Keyser. However, Frank & De Keyser shuttered in 1912 due to yet another disagreement. De Keyser eventually bought out Frank's interest and continued under the name De Keyser & Co.
