The elaborate seaside motif has majestic … Read more This hand-carved footed wooden chest is nothing short of spectacular given the detailed carving. The elaborate seaside motif has majestic Chinese junk sailboats, village dwellings including pagoda towers, and trees. The trunk/chest also includes a floral/botanical border with butterflies. Due to the camphor wood, the chest smells lovely when open. Our maternal grandparents acquired this hand-carved chest well before we were born, most likely in the late 1930s to the early 1940s. We added a glass topper with rounded corners several years ago that enables the top of the trunk/chest to be used as a display surface.

Wear, marks, and small cracks that are typical for an item of this age are present and can be seen in the pictures. Movers broke some pieces off of the lock; however, they likely can be attached by someone who is skilled in this type of work. The appearance of the trunk/chest is still lovely with the lock area as is.

We’re sad to have to let this trunk chest go, but downsizing makes it a must.
