"Aurora Ascending: Lady Jane Stanhope in the Light of Dawn"
Watercolour on Paper, c. 1785
In the Style of Sir Joshua Reynolds
A Radiant Vision in Watercolour
This ethereal and exquisitely rendered watercolour captures Lady Jane Stanhope, Countess of Harrington (1755–1824), portrayed as Aurora, the Roman goddess of the dawn. The medium’s inherent softness amplifies the portrait’s dreamlike aura, infusing the sitter with mythological grace and timeless elegance — far beyond conventional likeness.
A Composition Bathed in Light
Set against the delicate hues of a dawning sky, Lady Jane emerges in a sun-drenched grove, poised gracefully on a bed of blossoms. Behind her, the heavens glow in shades of rose, gold, and misted blue — a divine atmosphere evoking rebirth and awakening.
Her flowing white satin gown, arranged in classical drapery, is painted with sweeping, confident brushwork, its luminous folds alive with movement. A sheer sash, speckled with golden stars, dances behind her in the breeze. The artist blends fine facial detailing with looser atmospheric washes, resulting in a portrait that is both technically precise and poetically expressive.
Subtle iconography — celestial stars, fresh flowers, rising light — hints at purity, transformation, and feminine divinity, themes well understood by the cultivated audiences of 18th-century Britain.
️ The Grand Manner Reimagined
This portrait exemplifies the Grand Manner tradition championed by Sir Joshua Reynolds, with its classical allusions, noble bearing, and elevated symbolism. Though not by Reynolds himself, the artist clearly channels his influence: the balance of allegory and idealism, the dignified composition, and the elevation of sitter to icon.
About the Sitter: Lady Jane Stanhope
Born Jane Fleming, heiress of Sir John Fleming, 1st Baronet, Lady Jane married Charles Stanhope (later the 3rd Earl of Harrington) in 1779, ascending into the heart of Georgian aristocracy. Celebrated for her beauty and intellect, she served as Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Charlotte and was a muse to many portraitists of her time.
Artist & Influence
Although the artist remains anonymous, their deep familiarity with Reynolds’ aesthetic is evident. This work reflects the stylistic principles taught in his circle — combining classical myth, painterly refinement, and expressive portraiture to elevate both subject and viewer. It stands as a refined tribute to Reynolds’ enduring legacy.
️ Framing & Presentation
The artwork is elegantly housed in a newly added reverse-profile gilt wood frame with a distressed gold leaf finish , sympathetic to its 18th-century roots. It has been expertly conserved and fitted with museum-grade AR70 glass — UV-filtering and anti-reflective — ensuring both visual clarity and long-term protection.
