This vintage Afghan Maimana Kilim, measuring 6'9" x 9'9", is handwoven with wool on a wool foundation by the Maimana tribes of Northern Afghanistan. Kilims and flat weaves are distinguished by their pile-free construction, created by tightly interlacing warp and weft threads to form a smooth, flat surface. Typically woven on horizontal looms, this technique results in sharp geometric patterns. Lighter and softer than traditional pile rugs, kilims have also been used as sofa covers, drapes, pillows, tablecloths, wall hangings, and insulation against harsh cold.
