A richly textured 1970s floral still life by American artist William Preston, skillfully executed in a rare combination of watercolor on board. This mixed-media piece showcases an expressive botanical composition, rendered in earthy, natural tones with loose brushwork and layered depth. The floral subject—appearing dried and organic—evokes a quiet, introspective beauty. Housed in its original vintage gold wood frame with linen matting, the piece is signed by the artist in the lower right and retains its original hanging hardware. A soulful, museum-worthy work ideal for collectors of mid-century American art and rustic elegance.
Artist Bio:
Born in 1930, William Preston lived his art, translating life’s meaning through drawings and paintings over a five-decade-long career. Whether selling bullfight ink drawings in Mexico City, practicing sumi-e in Los Angeles, illustrating books in New York City, or exhibiting elegant watercolors from his lobster shack gallery in Maine, Preston was a devoted visual storyteller.
His solo shows spanned Boston, Maine, Washington D.C., Miami, Texas, and New Mexico. After serving in the Air Force during the Korean War, Preston spent time in Mexico City during the 1950s, capturing life in sketches sold to tourists and galleries. He later worked in New York as a book illustrator and radio show producer, before settling in Ogunquit, Maine, where he became a key part of the Ogunquit Art Colony.
Preston’s path eventually led him to Houston, where he met and married artist Marianne Hornbuckle. Together, they moved to New Mexico, becoming known for their evocative Southwestern landscapes. William continued to explore classical guitar and flamenco, enriching the couple’s creative life. His work remains a testament to a life devoted to art, expression, and exploration.
