The inspiration for this work was Vincent Van Gogh’s “Portrait of Dr. Gachet.” Both versions of the original perceptively convey … Read more The inspiration for this work was Vincent Van Gogh’s “Portrait of Dr. Gachet.” Both versions of the original perceptively convey the sitter’s sense of utter frustration, perhaps at his portraitist’s deteriorating condition. It was “a broken heart,” according to the master. Van Gogh was Paul Gachet’s patient during the last months of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, even in the final hours after he had shot himself in the wheatfields nearby.
Inspired by this work, San Franisco painter Henrico (Richio) Galvez dialed up the volume with his “Dr. Gachet”. This is a portrait of a man who has lost his own way. Galvez’s scaled-up impasto technique makes the work all the more intense, in lockstep with our era. It would be hard to match this for its power in portraying an insight into the mind. See less
