Well-fed, well-dressed, and well satisfied, counting and accounting for the money. The unknown painter has caught in these two the personification of the approbation against a profession which might be inclined to profit off the poor. This bejeweled duo doesn’t appear to be bothered in the least. How fitting that this was painted on copper and encased in a baronial frame worthy of J. Pierpont Morgan’s private study.
Quentin Metsys, the Belgian-born painter who inspired this work was thought to be a master at capturing individual character, sometimes directing it to satirical effect, “often revealing human flaws like greed and avarice.” Just so.
