Description of the item:
rare ceramic plate, with thick, compact glazing heavily finished with acids, giving the glaze a distinct orange peel effect. Entirely modeled and decorated by hand, with a sailing ship in the center depicted in various shades of yellow and green on a red background. Signed on the back in black "avallone vietri." made in vietri by the avallone factory and, in our opinion, attributable to guido gambone, who worked with the factory, first as an apprentice and then as head painter, around the mid-1920s. In fact, after the photos of the object, we have included a photo of a plate with a sailing ship, very similar to ours, made by gambone for the pinto factory, as proof of our attribution.
useful information for evaluating the item:
our internet research shows that the auction results for francesco avallone's work are all very high. For example, two small vases were both sold for €1,100 by an boetto auction house in genoa on october 27, 2022, both entitled "a vase with a marine subject (c.1930)," while a pair of plates, with orange peel glazing similar to that of our plate, were sold for €1,260, including fees, at the anauction on july 6, 2023, entitled "plates (c. 1925)," all to give an idea of the value of the ceramics produced by this manufacturer. Then, considering that it is very likely that this plate was created by guido gambone when he was working with the avallone manufacturer, we found several objects made by guido gambone, mostly vases, different in shape and decoration, but very similar to our plate in the type of glaze, which is thick, compact, rather dense and voluminous, slightly opaque and with an orange peel effect, sold at very high prices ranging from €3,000 to over €5,000. Obviously, this is our attribution; it is not possible to define the authorship of this plate with certainty, as it is not signed by the artist, but only by the manufacturer, which is why we are offering the object at such an advantageous price.
information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
the "avallone" factory for the production of artistic ceramics and majolica was founded in vietri in the last quarter of the 19th century by andrea avallone. The factory closed its doors for good in the mid-1930s. From 1920 onwards, it collaborated with important artists including guido gambone, dario poppi from faenza, giosuè procida, matteo rispoli, giuseppe cassetta, and many others. It is considered one of the oldest and most important manufacturers in vietri. In the last photo, we have included additional historical information about the manufacturer for those who wish to learn more.
