Neoclassical Louis XVI commode hand-made in Italy in the late 1700s using cherry. The commode has very straight and elegant lines, and a conformation that is a bit out of the ordinary, with two large drawers on the top and two smaller drawers on each side of a small carved nook at the bottom. The chest sits on long, tapered and fluted legs. The handles and escutcheons are not original to the piece but still period. Throughout the case we can see the pegs used to hold the joints and, when opening the drawers, we can see the square nailed used to secure the drawer structure. The drawers are all inset and decorated with a thin, rectangular satinwood inlay, surrounded by ebony inlay. This inlay pattern is repeated also on the top, which features two boards with beautiful grain, framed by a thin curved molding on the edge. The molding was repaired in a couple of spots in the past.
Overall this is a beautiful chest, with gorgeous color and patina as well as elegant lines and proportions. Its overall look make it a piece that can fit well in different room, like an entryway to welcome your guests, an office or a bedroom with a nice light fixture and painting over it, or even a living room. Its looks are somewhat formal, but it can fit well in a more relaxed space as well without seeming out of place. The drawers word well, and the bottom two open only by using the key.
