Manufactured and distributed in the 1930s by the German company Bünte & Remmler Leuchtenfabrik, this desk lamp is perfectly in keeping with the production codes of the Bauhaus era. Its design, with its understated and elegant appearance, is based on its lighting function, a simple and effective aesthetic, and ease of mass production. It is made entirely of metal, with a gooseneck base that is adjustable, as is the lampshade.
The Bünte & Remmler Leuchtenfabrik desk lamp is a Bauhaus-style product from the 1920s and 1930s. It is in very good condition; the wiring is fully functional. Some signs of wear are noted, particularly on the inside of the lampshade.
The base measures 16 cm by 10 cm, the deflector is 15 cm in diameter and 18 cm long, and the height is 48 cm.
The Bauhaus Movement: This Applied Arts movement was born in 1919 in Germany under the leadership of the brilliant architect Walter Gropius. He founded the State Bauhaus in Weimar, a new academic institution—a reversal of the term "Hausbau" (house construction). This educational institution brought together the various building trades. Artists and craftspeople performed various projects and apprenticeships in cohesion and harmony with one another to create the "Built Work." These workshops and classrooms were home to numerous leading figures in 20th-century art and design, including Mies van der Rohe, Paul Klee, Kandinsky, Johannes Itten, Noholy-Nagy, Marc Stam, and Lyonel Feininger. The founding of the Bauhaus is considered by many historians and specialists to be the birth of industrial design.
