In 1954, the Swiss architect, furniture designer, sculptor, and artist Max Bill (1908-1994) designed the "Ulm Stool" as a seating option for students at the Ulm School of Design. In collaboration with the Dutch/German architect and designer Hans Gugelot (1920-1965), he created an intelligent seating object that could also be used as a side table or as a shelving unit. When turned upside down, the "Ulm Stool" also served as a practical carrying frame for documents and books. Our example was not manufactured by WB Form like the current stools and does not have a corresponding serial number. The stool is likely much older and was probably built in the 1970s. It consists of three boards connected by finger joints along the narrow edges. The seat and both side panels are made of spruce. The crossbar connecting the sides and providing stability is made of beech. Likewise, the two support slats at the free ends of the side panels prevent the soft spruce wood from splintering. Sturdy condition, with a very distinct patina. Height 44 cm. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
from
misattribution
