Dramatic multi-color geometric abstract painting by Virginia Sevier Rogers (American, 1917-2015). Vivid colorful rectangles in muted hues of red, sky blue, lavender, green and yellow reflect the onslaught of cars and highways that all blur together as we drive to work. Visible brushstrokes add depth and interest to this well balanced composition.
Color-field painting, with Action painting, one of two major strains of the 20th-century art movement known as Abstract Expressionism or the New York school. The term typically describes large-scale canvases dominated by flat expanses of color and having a minimum of surface detail. Color-field paintings have a unified single-image field and differ qualitatively from the gestural, expressive brushwork of such artists as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning. Color-field painting was identified in the mid-1950s by the American art critic Clement Greenberg, who then used the term post-painterly abstraction to describe the next generation of work by a group of painters that included Morris Louis, Helen Frankenthaler, and Kenneth Noland.

Virginia Sevier Rogers was born in Fort Collins, Colorado, Rogers studied with Hugh Breckenridge at the PAFA in 1934 and then earned a B.A. degree from the University of North Carolina and her M.A. at UC Berkeley. She pursued art at Berkeley and later in 1971 she moved to the Monterey Peninsula and purchased a farm on the Carmel Valley Road. Member of Society of Western artists, Artists Equity. See less
