It may have served as a kola … Read more This highly-detailed piece likely comes from the Yoruba people in Nigeria West Africa. It may have served as a kola (nut) bowl or as a divination vessel. It is roughly 8.75" tall and 15" across when measured at its greatest dimensions. There are two carved bird figures at opposing sides of the lid. They are separated by a handle which appears to be a carved crocodile. At either end of the handle, there are carved faces which may represent Eshu, the Trickster God, or reference another important figure. Green and white paint can still be found on the exterior surfaces. Within, the bowl is divided into two sections. The piece appears solid, though the lid doesn't fit flush and there is a missing piece below one of the heads. See less
