20th century Japanese puzzle box designed with hidden openings that can only be revealed by solving a sequence of sliding panels or other concealed mechanisms. The number of steps required to open these boxes can vary significantly, from a few to over a hundred. This box has only four moves to open. It’s more simple than most, but beautiful as an interesting & collectible accessory. Don’t worry, the opening instructions will be included.
These “himitsu-bako” (secret boxes) were made 200 years ago in Hakone, Japan during the Meiji period (late 1800s) to store valuables. Artists began to decorate the outside of the plain puzzle boxes with applied “yosegi-zeiku”, a mosaic style wood artistry veneer, a tradition which continues on today.
