An atmospheric figural oil of a young woman, shown seated at a dressing table and gazing into a hand-mirror. Signed lower left, "H. Helme" for Helge Helme (Danish, 1894-1987) and painted circa 1945.
This recipient of the Ronge scholarship studied at the Danish Royal Academy of Art of Fine Arts under Viggo Brandt (1918-1920). Helge Helme was a great admirer of feminine beauty and he devoted himself almost entirely to painting the female form. Helme’s skill in capturing female beauty was widely recognised, as was his delicate approach to his art. He was not in the habit of making quick sketches of his models but was dedicated to the meticulous composition and completion of his works.
In the 1920s and '30s, Helme travelled and painted in Britain, France, the Netherlands and Germany, developing his artistic skills during his travels. After returning to Denmark he set up his own painting school and devoted considerable time to education. Over the course of a long career, Helme was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. His work is held in private and public collections including in the permanent collection of the Copenhagen City Museum
