Item description:
Unique majolica vase entirely modeled on a hand-turned potter's wheel, with a very wide mouth folded inward and a neck with a wide outwardly curved band, while the body is narrow with a cylindrical section. Vase made by Aldo Londi for the Bitossi factory around 1950-1960, part of the limited edition "Arabesque" line. This is because the large blue glazed band on the body has a decoration, made entirely by hand in various shades of blue, reminiscent of Arabic tiles, while the bottom and mouth are brown with a rough satin finish. The vase has no markings, as is the case with many of Aldo Londi's pieces, which were often unsigned. The style is unmistakable and the artistic quality of the vase is very high, with a rather thick and heavy ceramic biscuit, and our attribution to Aldo Londi is certainly correct. The patina is good, perfectly in line with our dating. The vase is made in full modernist style or 1950s design.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
Our research has revealed that there are several vases similar to ours, also from Aldo Londi's Arabesque line produced for Bitossi, all offered at very high prices on other online art and antiques sales sites, ranging from a minimum of €850 to as much as €1,200 depending on the size of the vase. Many of the vases we found are very similar to ours, especially in the blue glazed central band decorations and the rest of the vase in brown with a satin finish, exactly like ours.
Information about the artist and/or manufacturer:
The "Bitossi" artistic ceramics factory was founded and has been run by Guido Bitossi since 1921. From 1946 until 1976, the ceramist Aldo Londi was appointed artistic director of the factory, which is based in Montelupo Fiorentino. Already active at the factory since the mid-1930s, he revolutionized its production, modernizing it and making it internationally renowned. Some of the factory's works are preserved at the Ceramics Museum in Faenza.
