This is an original cyanotype print on cotton rag paper from a negative captured using a pinhole camera with a Polaroid back—a unique combination of low-tech and high-tech for the time. Cyanotype is one of the earliest photographic printing methods, known for its striking indigo-blue tones.
Pinhole photography, now often classified as “alternative photography,” is one of the earliest forms of photographic capture. There’s a quiet magic to the way these cameras render light and time. Sadly, the specific Polaroid film used for this image is no longer available—it was a wonderfully playful and experimental medium. I was introduced to these alternative processes while studying at the International Center of Photography in New York City, under the guidance of photographer Craig Barber.
Each one-of-a-kind original print is signed in pencil by the artist, Christine Kiebert-Boss.
