Introduction

An intimate and beautifully observed original oil painting by British wildlife artist Pip McGarry (b.1955), depicting a young cheetah cub.

McGarry uses a warm naturalistic palette of ochres, earthy browns, soft golds, creamy whites and rich blacks to model the cub’s distinctive coat.

Individual hairs, whiskers and markings are rendered through controlled brushwork, while subtle blending around the ears and muzzle creates softness and convincing volume.

The cub’s large eyes form the emotional centre of the composition. Their direct gaze transforms what could have been a straightforward zoological study into an individual portrait possessing considerable character.

Behind the animal, muted greens and gently shifting tones suggest vegetation without identifying a particular location. McGarry handles this area much more broadly than the cub itself, producing a soft-focus atmospheric background against which the precisely rendered animal comes sharply forward.

The contrast is particularly effective and gives the relatively intimate composition considerable visual presence.

Pip McGarry (b.1955) is a British wildlife artist particularly associated with paintings of African animals and big cats.

His work has been informed by observation and photography of animals in their natural environments, with African wildlife becoming an important and enduring part of his artistic practice.

McGarry was closely associated with the Marwell International Wildlife Art Society and has exhibited wildlife paintings at established British venues and specialist exhibitions.

He also became familiar to a broader audience through television appearances relating to wildlife painting, including ITV’s “A Brush with the Wild”.

His paintings combine detailed naturalistic observation with an emphasis upon the character and presence of the individual animal.
