On offer is a post-World War II European cityscape. This scene, defined by French-influenced architecture, expresses a bright optimism that the worst is finally over. Here are people going about their daily lives in peace. The very ordinariness of this activity is beautiful. Spanish-born artist Jose Luis Campuzano produced multiple paintings identified as “Paris street scenes." But this one differs in its openness, in its sunlit palette, and the fact that this view is strictly residential. All of this suggests that Campuzano was working in one of Paris' outer arrondissements. Or was he? The canvas’ stretcher was made in New York.
Having grown up in Bilbao, Spain, the artist was well acquainted with city life. He lived in Canada to study at British Columbia’s University of Victoria. He continued his art studies with private instruction in New York City. After 1955 he lived in Montevideo, Uruguay; Sao Paulo, Brazil; and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Campuzano’s work had gallery exhibitions in Scottsdale, Boston, New Orleans, Chicago, and St. Louis. Likewise, he also exhibited extensively in Europe and South America.
