Item description:
pair of majolica and glazed ceramic bookends, entirely hand-decorated, made around 1930 by the austrian manufacturer liezen, in full art deco style. The folkloric clothing of the two children, both in terms of their features and the flowers, are very reminiscent of wiener keramic ceramics, specifically those by artists such as michael powolny and eduard klablena. Both sculptures are signed under the base with the name of the manufacturer engraved in the ceramic. The catalog number and place of production, "austria," are also present.
useful information for evaluating the item:
to give an idea of the value of ceramics from the austrian manufacturer liezen, our research found a series of pieces from this manufacturer sold at auction in 2024, lot 27, titled "a centerpiece with openwork foot with roe deer\."; a nativity scene sold for €625 in 2012, lot 307, titled "weihnachtsgrippe, liezener keramik-austria"; a sculpture of a man sitting on a large face sold for €450 in 2024; a cake stand supported by three cherubs sold for €600 in 2023, lot 139, titled "obstaufsatz, österr. Kunstkeramik, marke liezen"; and finally, a pair of bookends very similar to ours, except that instead of the two sculptures of a man and a woman, there are simple flowers, making them much simpler in design than our bookends, sold for €200 in 2022, lot 31, titled "paar buchstützen, alpenländische keramik liezen". A 25-30% auction fee must be added to all these prices. Finally, bear in mind that auction results for ceramics from the 1950s are often very disappointing, with high prices rarely being achieved, so the same pieces can be found for sale at more than double the auction price.
(by entering the details of the items we have indicated into google, especially the title of the auction or sale listing in the same language we have used and the auction house or name of the sales site, you will, in most cases, be able to find and view the items).
