Item description:
Two-handled vase in the shape of a Roman amphora, made of fine vitrified hard-paste porcelain, with a central decoration depicting a mythological scene with Cupid and Diana the huntress, two deities from Greek-Roman mythology, set in a rural landscape. The vase is richly finished in pure gold and has a large cubic base, entirely decorated by hand, separated from the vase and attached to it with an old 19th-century bolt. Made and marked under the base with an antique mark, in blue underglaze, by the Imperial Manufactory in Vienna. In addition, the vase is signed on the main decoration "F. Koller," which probably stands for Friedrich Ludwig von Köller, an 18th-19th century painter. The vase is made in full Empire style and can be dated between the late 1700s and the very early 1800s, and the wonderful patina that covers it, especially under the base, is perfectly in line with our dating.
Useful information for evaluating the item:
In the last photo, we have added an image of the antique marks used by the imperial manufactory in Vienna. Ours is number 9, used, as written in the notes, between 1790 and 1810, the same period as the vase. In our web research, we found several vases similar to ours, ranging from a minimum of €500 for the smallest and simplest vases to over €30,000 for pairs of similar vases, albeit much larger.
Information about artist and/or manufacturer:
The Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in Vienna was a porcelain manufacturer based in Vienna, which existed from 1718 to 1864. After the Elector of Saxony had founded the Meissen Manufactory, Emperor Charles VI granted Claudius Innocentius du Paquier a 25-year privilege for the manufacture of porcelain in 1718, the year in which the manufactory was founded. It is therefore considered the second oldest European hard-paste porcelain manufactory after Meissen. It boasts numerous important auction results and many of its pieces are preserved in various museums around the world.
