This elegant set of four dining chairs was designed by austrian architect oswald haerdtl and produced by thonet (later ton) in czechoslovakia during the 1950s. These pieces reflect the transition period of postwar central european design—where the legacy of thonet merged with the evolving modernism of the time. Expertly crafted from molded and steam-bent beech plywood, these chairs showcase haerdtl's architectural precision and refined sense of proportion. The gently curved backrest, notable for its signature cut-out detail, pairs sculptural expression with ergonomic function. The warm, golden wood grain has been beautifully preserved, giving each chair a rich, organic presence. The chairs stand on splayed tapered legs—an iconic mid-century feature—offering visual lightness and stability. Whether around a dining table or as stand-alone accents, these chairs add understated sophistication to both vintage and contemporary interiors.
haerdtl’s collaboration with thonet and later ton represents a key chapter in modern furniture history. While thonet was known for revolutionizing bentwood furniture in the 19th century, ton (the nationalized successor) continued that tradition into the mid-20th century, producing refined designs for both private and public interiors.
