It’s hard to restrain oneself from wanting to examine this piece up close, never mind the yearning to touch it, to experience its delicate three-dimensionality. Fortunately for the work’s preservation, this limited edition is protected behind glass.
The late Austrian-American artist Anne Youkeles (1920-2017) began her fine art studies at Kunstgewerbe Schule (now known as University of Applied Arts Vienna), continuing after moving to the United States, at Ohio State University. Throughout her adult life, she made her home in both countries. In the 1950s-1960s, Youkeles’ initial interest was in figurative work, but by the late 1960s, she focused on exploring three-dimensional abstraction rendered in paper, canvas, painting, sculpture, and silkscreens, often drawn to creating a whole, unified composition out of multiple pieces, as with this restful and fascinating work.
Titled “Afterglow” #54 in a limited edition of 70. Signed by the artist.
