A review from an art historian:
At the turn of the 20th century, the new edge of post-Impressionism was the adventure of color known as Fauvism (the school of wild beasts) coined by a critic, as many other art movements. It was the forerunner of psychedelic art of the 1960s. With plentiful, all color, large reproductions and fine biographical essays, a search for a used copy would be highly worthwhile, since no other book currently available can match this specific survey. The style was short-lived, overtaken by Cubism, but even Cubist Braque began as a Fauvist. Short brush strokes, impasto areas of broad flat colors, hues chiefly straight out the commercial tubes of paint, and rapid sketch-like forms characterize this form. Included in the survey are Georges Braque, Charles Camoin, André Derain, Raoul Dufy, Othon Friesz, Henri Mangin, Albert Marquet, Henri Matisse, Jean Pyu, Louis Valtat, Kees Van Dongen, and Maurice de Vlaminck. Here, then, is a collection of bright, warm, bold cityscapes and landscapes, portraits, and still life paintings still alive with joy and optimism. Personally, my own art owes much to the Fauvists, and this book has its place of honor. Author Jean-Louis Ferrier has produced an exemplary book that fills a gap in 20th-century art history.
