Glazed ceramic plate signed Jean Marais, face & tree, Vallauris
Immerse yourself in the dreamlike and enigmatic world of Jean Marais (1913-1998) with this decorative wall plate in glazed orange terracotta ceramic featuring a surreal illustration of a face rooted to the branches of a tree as if in a dream, typical of the style of this great and multi-talented French artist!
Created in the 1970s and 1980s, Jean Marais is a legendary actor in French cinema. Known for films such as "Beauty and the Beast," "Donkey Skin," and his roles in "The Hunchback," he stands out for his talent as an actor blending mystery and action. Influenced by his lover, Jean Cocteau, they shared a common interest in art, particularly illustration, which the latter introduced him to. It was finally in 1970, or 1973 to be precise, that Marais made a complete change to fully exploit his talents in the visual arts: sculpture, illustration, but especially ceramics, by moving to Vallauris, and thanks to the help of his friends, Jo and Nini Pasquali, who taught him the art of "throwing" his ceramics.
Self-taught, he distinguished himself with a style all his own: fine drawing lines, as if engraved in a pattern, blended with the brutality of the ceramics as a support for his artistic vision, creating this dreamlike surrealist blend specific to his own vision of reality. He was one of the many artists who contributed to the revival of Vallauris ceramics, and to this day, he remains an iconic ceramist and sculptor. Jean Marais's work here is at the crossroads of surrealism and art brut, blending human and nature, with a tree with a rooted face.
Lovers of 20th-century ceramics and Jean Marais, don't wait any longer! Adopt a work that dares to blend man and nature, poetry and silence, myth and reality. It's a statement piece, rich in symbolism, perfect for an interior that aims to be unique and deconstructed!
