This bold and emotionally charged acrylic painting on canvas by Niagara exemplifies her signature fusion of comic book aesthetics and feminist punk attitude. Signed lower right. Circa 2000s. The composition features a striking blue-toned woman with dark hair and vivid red lips glares with a mix of defiance and regret. Her thought bubble reads: “IS MY REVENGE JUSTIFIED? IT MADE SENSE... BUT THAT’S ALL IT MADE.”
Rendered in thick black outlines and flat blocks of saturated color, the painting draws on mid-century pop art language reminiscent of Roy Lichtenstein, yet subverts it with sharp wit and raw introspection. The cool palette of teals and blues contrasts powerfully with the hot red lips and the cool detachment of the text, creating a tension that reflects inner turmoil. Niagara, known as both a visual artist and a pioneering punk musician, infuses her work with themes of empowerment, irony, and femme rebellion. This painting is a strong example of her cultural voice—blending humor, melancholy, and strength in a single iconic image.
Niagara, born in Detroit, Michigan, 1955, is a painter and musician. She was the lead vocalist of the proto-punk rock bands Destroy All Monsters and Dark Carnival. Her painting derives principally from the Lowbrow art movement. From a private collection. Dimensions: 25"h x 20"w x 2"d (framed). In very good condition.
