The artist of this piece, William "Bill" Stephens Shields Jr. (1925-2010), was born in San Francisco and following the death … Read more The artist of this piece, William "Bill" Stephens Shields Jr. (1925-2010), was born in San Francisco and following the death of his father in 1931, the then-4 year-old grew up in Texas. After service in the US Navy during WW II, Shields studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Major book and periodical publishers were clients for his award-winning illustrations. However, after travels in Mexico and France, the artist chose to explore various fine arts. He eventually became recognized for his large abstract oil paintings, which were exhibited in New York, San Francisco, and Connecticut galleries. He also was engaged as a professor of art at the California College of Arts and Crafts (currently California College of the Arts in San Francisco), and the San Francisco Art Institute. See less
