This primitively rendered but admiring tribute to George Washington has a distinguished artistic lineage. The painter was undoubtedly in the presence of a much admired print engraved by William Sartain (1843 - 1924) of Philadelphia. In fact, the Sartain work was acknowledged by an Act of Congress in 1864.
Of course, the subject being the Father of our Nation, there is more. The engraving was inspired by "Washington and His Family," painted by Christian Schussele (1824 - 1879) also of Philadelphia. The latter work shows George and Martha Washington seated. He is shown here in the same pose but facing in the opposite direction. The First Couple additionally are presented with their grandchildren George Washington Parke Custis and Nelly Custis, whom they raised. William Lee, George Washington's freed valet, is depicted entering with a letter. There’s even a map of Washington’s namesake capital, set on the table in that original painting.
July 4, 2026, known as the Semiquincentennial, marks the 250th birthday of our nation’s founding. Grand events are in the works nationwide. Perhaps this image of our first and arguably most noble President will find a place in your home to commemorate the once-in-a-lifetime occasion.
