This sculptural armchair 'No.5' was created in former West-Berlin, Germany during the 1980s by an artist / designer not yet known to us.
The piece originates from the radical and experimental design scene of the so-called 'New German Design Movement', the epicenter of which was West-Berlin in the 1980s.
The iconic design of this armchair plays with an ironic blend of elements, reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright or Charles Rennie Makintosh furniture design but with a postmodern twist.
Its wooden frame is marked with the number '5'.
It may have been hand-crafted in a small limited numbered series or in variants.
The frame is made of lacquered ash or pine and features a hand-made seat cushion covered with an artistic patchwork in leather and fur.
The artist apparently originally intended an ironic postmodern pattern for the seat or parts of the frame, reminiscent of the structure of a leopard skin. Remnants of this can still be seen on the underside of the seat.
