Space Age Lounge Chair and Ottoman | Hungarian Applied Arts Company, 1970s
This exceptional lounge chair and ottoman set is a rare and iconic example of Hungarian Space Age design, manufactured in the 1970s by the Hungarian Applied Arts Company (Magyar Iparművészeti Vállalat). Blending ergonomic innovation with sculptural modernism, the set reflects the bold futuristic aesthetics of the Jet Age, while providing supreme comfort and technical precision.
The organically shaped shells are made of high-strength fiberglass—an advanced material of the time—molded into fluid, aerodynamic curves and finished in a radiant high-gloss yellow lacquer. These are mounted on elegant pedestal bases in satin black with metal disc feet, adding structural stability and stylistic contrast. The lounge chair features a perfectly functioning 360-degree swivel mechanism, allowing for easy movement and dynamic interaction within a space.
Both chair and ottoman have been meticulously restored. The cushions are newly reupholstered in top-grade Italian scratch-resistant faux leather in deep black, offering both luxury and durability. The surfaces are detailed with handcrafted tufting that enhances visual depth and evokes classic 1970s upholstery patterns. The cushions have been fully refilled to ensure long-lasting ergonomic support. The chair’s form is designed to cradle the body in a gently reclined position, promoting deep relaxation, while the ottoman offers ideal elevation for the legs or can double as an auxiliary seat.
This set embodies the optimism and imagination of the Space Age, combining striking visual presence with comfort-driven functionality. It’s a show-stopping centerpiece for any mid-century modern, retro-futuristic, or eclectic interior—perfect for collectors, architects, and curators alike.
