Estimated to be at least 100 years old, this completely hand-made, elegant pair of tall chalices (very possibly from a church of yesteryear) are beautifully hand-cut (or chased) with lovely floral designs; some of the metal areas of the chalices themselves are thickly formed in similar design. To us, the decorative feel of them is of Art Nouveau, and extremely detailed in all the workmanship. They give an extra-large impression and are very elegant.
They have been restored to their original silver-plated finish by our metal restoration expert. The underneath metal is of a pure silver-color look; a metalsmith we worked with a number of years ago felt quite sure they were made of Britannia metal (a pewter substitute designed for brightness and workability).
With their extremely pleasing curved shapes, they were converted a number of years ago into table lamps, with nickel-silver vase caps, necks and fine nickeled-brass 3-way sockets, plus lampshade hardware. We added some new parts and rewired them to give them a fresh, safely usable life for a long time to come. There are some age markings of slight wear to the silver, but overall, are relatively unnoticeable. By our present professional studio standards, you are receiving at least a $600 job value just for the conversion of these chalices into lamps, in addition to the metal restoration.
The chalices stand 19.5" tall, 8.5" wide at the base and 7.5" wide at the top. The rod and socket assembly adds another 7". With a harp and finial, the total height is 34.5". A note about shades: the shade in the pictures is NOT included; it is just shown here as a sample. When you get a pair of shades for them, the harps can always be changed out to a different length; or shade risers used. We picked a harp-size to meet general, good aesthetic proportions for them as they are.
