Vintage framed piece of traditional Mexican bark paper art, known as Amate paper.
Origin and Production:
Amate paper is an ancient form of bark paper manufactured in Mexico, notably by the Otomí people in the village of San Pablito, Puebla. It's made from the bark of trees like the red jonote and mulberry, which is then processed and formed into sheets.
Cultural Significance:
Historically, Amate paper was used by pre-Columbian civilizations like the Maya and Nahua for codices and records. Today, it remains important in ritual ceremonies, such as blessings of crops, and is also used as a canvas for painting and other artistic expressions.
Artistic Evolution:
The paper cuts, often depicting deities or spirits (like the Pomegranate Spirit in the image), are a traditional art form, and the popular Otomi cloth embroideries evolved from these paper cuts.
Modern Revival:
After a period of decline following the Spanish conquest, Amate paper production and art experienced a revival in the 20th century, gaining national and international recognition as a unique form of Mexican folk art.
