James Stokeld was born on 13 April 1827 in Sunderand, County Durham, the third son of Thomas Stokeld and Dorothy Stokeld. He spent most of his life in the North East of England, living in various places in County Durham.
He died on 21 November 1877 at the age of 50. Although he was married, there is no record of any children of the marriage.
The painting appears to have been relined (as found)
