A beautifully preserved early 19th-century hand-colored engraving from the celebrated Cries of London series, originally painted by Francis Wheatley, R.A. (1747–1801) and published by Colnaghi & Co., London in 1812. This plate—No. 4, engraved by Samuel Aliprandi—is titled “Do You Want Any Matches?” (Marchande d’Allumettes, Achette mes bonnes Allumettes?).
The scene captures the everyday life of London’s street vendors, depicting a young woman selling matches, shown in profile yet glancing back toward the viewer. She is accompanied by a small boy carrying matches in both hand and basket, with a dog, carriage, and architectural backdrop adding narrative depth. The composition exemplifies Wheatley’s sympathetic and finely observed portrayal of working-class life in late 18th- and early 19th-century London.
The engraving is hand-colored, enhancing the delicacy of the line work and bringing warmth and immediacy to the scene. It is presented in an elegant gilt-painted wood frame, complementing the period character of the print and ready for display.
