Henri Matisse ( 1869 - 1954 ) the French born artist is known for both his sense of color and fluid aesthetic. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso as one of the most important artists who helped to define and influence radical Contemporary Art of The Twentieth Century. His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing won him recognition as a leading figure in world Modern Art.
The " Blue Nudes " Series of collage artworks was originally made by Matisse from paper cut-outs depicting figures in various positions. Restricted by his physical condition after surgery, he began creating artworks by cutting and painting sheets of paper by hand until his death in 1954.
In 1941, while recovering from an operation that nearly claimed his life, 71 year-old Matisse turned to a new technique. He had conceived The Cut-Outs as independent pictorial works. By the time of his death, he had created cut-outs of truly outstanding quality that drew together the threads of an entire life's work. Cutting into vividly colored papers, he compared himself to a sculptor carving stone.
Despite the flatness of paper, the cut-outs reflect Matisse's earlier sculptures in the tangible relief like quality, especially in the sense of volume created by the overlapping of the cut-outs. The color blue signified distance and volume to Matisse, he was moved and inspired to use solid slabs of single color. The " Blue Nudes " Series were inspired by his collection of African sculpture and his visit to Tahiti in 1930. The culmination of his inspirations and post operative period of incapacity to paint synthesized those influences into this seminal series of iconic images.
Matisse's fascination with color and his Joi De Vivre are inextricably bound up in his paper cut-outs. In the artist's late oeuvre, regarded as the peak of his output, color, line, and form are blended into a perfect synthesis, exuding a visionary power that seems more contemporary than ever before.
