A rare and highly evocative early 20th-century Japanese bronze vase, attributed to Okazaki Sessei (Sessei Zo)—the art name of Okazaki Shojiro (1854–1921), one of the most respected metal artists of the late Meiji and Taishō periods.
The vase presents a globular form, cast in bronze and finished with an irregular yaki-urushi (kiln-baked lacquer) patina in a richly mottled watermelon green tone. The surface displays remarkable depth and variation, with subtle shifts in hue and texture that speak to the hand-crafted nature of the process and the experimental spirit of early 20th-century Japanese decorative arts.
Sessei’s work is known for bridging traditional Japanese metalwork with emerging modernist sensibilities, and this piece exemplifies that balance—restrained in form yet visually dynamic in surface treatment. The applied lacquer patina creates a softly organic appearance, making the vase as sculptural as it is functional.
Attributed examples of Okazaki Sessei’s bronzes are increasingly sought after by collectors of Japanese art, Meiji–Taishō metalwork, studio ceramics, and Asian decorative arts. This piece dates to approximately circa 1916, aligning with the mature period of the artist’s career.
Condition:
Very good antique condition consistent with age. Natural surface variations, subtle wear, and patina irregularities are inherent to the original firing and lacquer process and contribute to the piece’s authenticity and character.
A refined and contemplative object—equally at home in a contemporary interior, curated collection, or scholarly Asian art setting.
