The collector was a beloved nurse in the community, and many of her quilts were gifts from grateful patients, relative, and friends. This particular quilt is made of patches cut from scraps of unused, discarded cotton clothing and possibly flour sacks. The colors in this quilt are strong and vibrant The star design was popular dating from at least as far back as the mid-1800s. We believe that this quilt was made some time during the mid-1900s. It came from Patrick County, Virginia, on the border with North Carolina. The quilt is made with no batting; this indicates that it was made to be used as a bedspread or summer quilt. We know that it was washed in a washing machine because some of the dark colors have bled through onto the off-white muslin back. (Our advice would be to dry clean the quilt rather than use a washing machine, but at least we know that the quilt is sturdy and well constructed.) It is in excellent, almost pristine condition -- other than the aforementioned dye bleed-through from washing in a machine. We have found no loose stiches, no tears, no stains, or no other signs of age or use. This quilt measures 70 inches by 84 inches. Depending upon the HEIGHT of your bed and mattress, this quilt could be used as a coverlet on a standard full/double bed or an antique three-quarter bed. Please measure accordingly. See less

There is some dye bleed-through on the back side -- a sign that the quilt has been washed in a washing machine (and an indication that the quilt is well made and sturdy). We have found no loose stitches, tears, rips, or stains of any sort. less
